The National Museum System is a project coordinated by the Directorate-General of Museums of
the Ministry of Culture, which aims to create a network for the nearly 5,000 Italian museums
and places of cultural interest – public (state-owned and non) and private – in order to
improve the system of use, accessibility and sustainable management of cultural heritage.
The system – which museums can join on a voluntary basis and through an accreditation
process – aims to guide the governance of cultural heritage according to principles of
sustainability, innovation and participation.
Participation in the system requires recognised quality and a willingness towards continuous
and progressive improvement, with standardised levels of quality applied to all Italian
museums and places of cultural interest, both public and private, regardless of their
ownership, size or the region in which they are found.
